Natural and Manufactured Stone issues and problems

The popularity of natural stone or manufactured stone (Adhered masonry veneer) materials has led to an increase of problems associated with the installation of these claddings.

A nationwide inspection company collected data on over 2000 adhered stone applications across the U.S. and parts of Canada and found that approximately 98% of structures with adhered stone (regardless of whether it’s natural or manufactured stone) had installation defects that could lead to moisture intrusion, 23% had elevated moisture at the time of inspection, and 34% had physical damage as a result of moisture intrusion.

Topic will include:

Terminology, features, and identification of natural and manufactured stone

Installation details of the water resistive barrier. lathe, sealant joints, penetrations, flashings, transitions at dissimilar materials, weep screeds, clearances, and best practices

Examples of improper and proper construction details to control moisture infiltration and prevent indoor air quality problems
